The true spirit of the Basque Country is best discovered through its traditional villages in the Labourd province.
As was customary in Biarritz during the Belle Époque, we’ll begin the morning with an impromptu picnic breakfast in the village of Bidart, overlooking the ocean beside a seaside chapel. We'll enjoy Gâteau Basque, local delicacies, and champagne with stunning coastal views.
Scenic walk along the cliffs by the Atlantic.
We then head to Getaria, an authentic Basque seaside village and a favorite weekend escape for Parisians. Here, we'll learn the rules of Pelota—the Basque Country’s most iconic sport—and even try our hand at a few rounds.
Lunch will be served at Gaztelur, one of the region’s finest restaurants, where antique elegance and modern design meet in perfect harmony with nature. The setting inspires chef Alexandre Bousquet to create culinary masterpieces.
In Itxassou, the cherry capital of the French Basque Country, we’ll explore the heart of Basque jam-making. The local black cherry is the perfect companion to Fromage de Brebis—the region’s sheep milk cheese. We’ll visit a farm that produces Ossau-Iraty, with a guided tasting session.
Our journey continues to Espelette, the homeland of the famed Espelette red pepper. It’s everywhere: adorning window shutters, flavoring traditional dishes, and infusing cheeses, chocolates, jams, and even drinks. We'll uncover the secrets behind this beloved spice, a staple of French cuisine. The village is also known for its vibrant Pepper Festival held every October.
Dinner will be at Euzkadi, a traditional Basque inn serving authentic regional cuisine.
